Portfolio v7 introduced this for some formats, JPEG and uncompressed TIFF, and other formats are likely to be added in due course.
Mac users have the option of using the Export 'pnot' Data option which appears to allow data to be 'embed' information from any or all of the following fields: thumbnail, description, keywords - with the option to replace existing keywords. The process is described on page 128 of the manual (v5 - p190), but there is no information about PNOT at the URL cited on that page. There is a short FAQ article on pnot here.
Other than PNOT (not sure if supported by OS X), the only options are:
Using scripting of both Portfolio and an image editing program, e.g. Photoshop, it may be possible to automate the entire export and update process in one process using VB (Win) or AppleScript (Mac).
