If the latest version/service pack of your OS isn't listed, don't fret; Portfolio should work OK on it. Basically the specs are written for vN.0 and ont updated during the life of version N. For current but unlisted OS versions coverage by "...or better" can be assumed. For less mainstream things like 64-bit versions it is worth checking with the vendor directly.

For new versions coming out after vN.0, you need to check. Vendors and users never know until Microsoft or Apple release a version/SP what is 'in' the final release, so do allow a little time for testing after new OS releases. If you're running the latest OS, drop a line to Extensis - making clear your OS version. At worst you may hear some features don't work - but most likely an later update will fix them. For significant OS releases there is normally a vN.n releases.

You should always ensure you are running the same major version number of all parts of the suite you use (client, server, SQL connect, NP)

Version 9

Version 9 uninstalls previous versions so take this into account before installing.

Notes:
1. * Required on the machine that is used to administer the server through the web interface. May be administered remotely.
2. ** While lower-grade processors are supported, it is not recommended for installations serving catalogs with a large number of assets (and AutoSync folders) or supporting more than 5 concurrent client connections. For optimal performance, choose a processor capable of supporting Java 6. See the following site for more information: Java SE 6 release notes and supported configurations.Java SE 6 is available on 64-bit, Intel-based Macs only
3. *** 32-bit emulated mode only, under Windows Server 2008 64-bit Edition.
4. If you have very large database that is being maintained through AutoSync folders, the performance of Portfolio Server will be positively affected by faster processors and more memory.
5. Additional disk space is required to store catalogue files. By default, these files are stored inside the Server application's folder, though they may be stored elsewhere by means of aliases/shortcuts (see Server section of the FAQ).
6. For production work, ideally Server OSs should be used. Indeed, these are the only options for Windows -based servers.
Portfolio 9 Server SQL Connect System additional requirements
Mac OS Windows OS
SQL Connect Macintosh:

Minimum Hardware Requirements:
1.6 GHz or faster Intel Core processor
1 GB available system memory
1 GB available of initial hard drive space for each catalog

Recommended Hardware Requirements:
Dual 2.0 GHz or faster G5 or Intel Core processor(s)
RAM: 2 GB

MySQL Requirements:
MySQL Database v5.1.30
MySQL Connector/ODBC v3.51.27
SQL Connect Windows:

Minimum Hardware Requirements:
2 GHz Server-class processor or faster
1 GB available system memory
1 GB available of initial hard drive space for each catalog

Recommended Hardware Requirements:
CPU: 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 or equivalent
RAM: 2 GB
For cross-platform environments, Extensis recommends that Services for Macintosh (SFM) be installed.

MySQL Requirements:
MySQL Database v5.1.30
1 GB available hard drive space for each catalog database, initially
1 GB available system memory
2 GHz or faster processor(s)
MySQL Connector/ODBC v3.51.27

Microsoft SQL Server Requirements:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP3, 2008 SP1
Microsoft SQL Server ODBC Driver v9.0.3068
2 GHz or faster processor(s)
1 GB available system memory
1 GB available hard drive space for each catalog database, initially

Oracle Database Requirements:
Oracle Database 10gR2 with Oracle Instant Client 10.2.0.3
Oracle ODBC Driver for Windows v10.02.00.01
Notes:
1. Newer database engines and ODBC drivers may function properly, but have not been verified. Use alternate or newer database engines and ODBC drivers at your own risk.
2. Portfolio Server installations on the Macintosh platform require Intel Core processor to function correctly. MySQL installations on PowerPC systems are supported only on different systems than where Portfolio Server is installed.
3. Other Recommendations:
  • A. For SQL Connect implementations, Extensis recommends installing the SQL database server on a separate system, to take advantage of dedicated system resources. When the SQL database server is installed on the same machine as the Portfolio Server, consider adding additional system memory (RAM), processor and faster hard disks.
  • B. Increase memory and adjust database settings for the configured SQL database server to improve performance.
  • C. Use the backup management provided by your SQL database server.
  • D. While lower-grade processors are supported, it is not recommended for installations serving catalogs with a large number of assets (and AutoSync folders) or supporting more than 5 concurrent client connections.
  • E. SQL Connect catalogs vary in size, depending on the options configured by your SQL database server. Choose a server with adequate disk space for your implementation. Monitor and optimize your server and databases regularly, as this data will grow with the number of asset records.
4. There is a single installer for Portfolio Server & SQL Connect. SQL Connect is enabled via the purchase of a separate serial code aplied to Portfolio Server.
5. It's important to note that the SQL Server (whatever vendor type) need not be installed on the same server as Portfolio Server, though unless other databases use the same SQL engine it is useful to colocate the tools. SQLConnect manages the data connection between Portfolio Server and the SQL server whether local or elsewhere on the LAN; a WAN connection between the two is not advised unless on a very fast private connection. On the LAN if separate installs consider using a gigabit link.
6. Besides these Portfolio requirements, you also need to consider the SQL vendor's licensing requirements for CALs, CPU licences, etc., as existing licensing may need to be extended to allow for SQL-based Portfolio use. If uncertain as to the additional requirements you should contact Extensis directly and request guidance.
Portfolio Server Project Sync additional requirements
Mac OS Windows OS
Notes:
1. Project Sync is currently discontinued. There is no CS4 version at all, just the CS3 version that can only be used with v8.5.x
NetPublish System Requirements
Mac OS Windows OS
Mac OS X Server 10.4.4 or higher
1GHz or faster G4, G5 or Intel Core processor(s)
512MB of system RAM
200 MB available hard disk space
QuickTime 7 or higher
Apache 1.3 (default installation)
Network interface for server connection
Browser: Internet Explorer 5.2 or higher, Netscape 7.0 or higher, or Safari 1.1 or higher
Windows Windows XP Professional, 2000 Server or 2003 Server
1 GHz Pentium (2 GHz or faster recommended)
256MB of system RAM (512MB recommended)
50 MB available hard disk space
CD-ROM (for installation - unless a downloaded installer)
Network interface for server connection
Microsoft IIS 5 or 6 web server
Browser: Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, Netscape 7.0 or higher
Note: 1. Additional disk space is required to store sites created with NetPublish and cache files. These content files are stored inside the application's folder and not in the \my documents\ or ~/user/ space.
2. NetPublish v9 only works with (served) v9 catalogues.
2. Ideally, on upgrading to v9, existing web sites should be republished from v9 clients. There should be no problems with previous vendor-supplied templates (v7.x/v8.x/v8.5.x) requiring adjustments.
3. For production work, ideally Server OSs should be used. However, for demo/light proof of concept work the app will run on desktop OSs: OS 10.4.4+, Windows 2000(SP4), Windows XP(SP2). 4. Version v9.0 does not currently allow installation on Windows Server 2008 though support for this is intended and should come in the first patch to v9.

The previous need for QuickTime (on window computers) seems to have gone away except for standalone clients.

Version 8.5

Technical Requirements for running elements of Portfolio v8.5.x and NetPublish v8.5.x are shown below. For more detailed information see the readme files for the appropriate version. The data below is based on published data from Extensis. Mac users with Intel chips should use v8.1.1+. New OS releases after v8.5 launch such as Mac OS 10.5 are likely to result in updates being issued to some or all modules.

v8.5.1+ should be used if on OS 10.5 Leopard. v8.5.1 introduced custom 'Catalog Types' and Adobe CS3 XMP SDK libraries (improved XMP read/write).

v8.5.2 introduced hierarchical preview folders (requires thumbnail rebuild for existing catalogues).

Portfolio 8.5 is not backward compatible with previous versions, and all clients and app servers must be running the same major/minor version (i.e. v8.5.x). Older catalogues, e.g. v8.1.1, will need to be upgraded to v8.5 on first use. This is not a difficult procedure but if you think you may want to revert to the older version, take a backup as there is no rollback. A client can usually open an unserved version+1 FDB but this should only be tried in a crisis, e.g. retrieving data after an unintended update; it should not be attempted for production work and is certainly not a supported configuration.

Notes:
1. New to v8.5 there are now separate serial codes for Mac and Windows clients (owing to extra sub-licensed components in the Windows clients). Otherwise client serial codes function as previously
2. Only Client Connect client versions, but not Stand Alone (different licence type) can access and use Portfolio Server. There is a single client installer per OS. The type of serial code applied dictates Client Connect vs. Stand Alone functionality.

2. For more metrics on hardware spec vs. usage see page 14 of the version 8 [sic] Server User Guide and also page 13 of the v8.5 manual update. PDF format versions of these manuals are installed by Portfolio Server in its documentation folder.
3. It's important to note that the SQL Server (whatever vendor type) need not be installed on the same server as Portfolio Server. SQLConnect manages the data connection between Portfolio Server and the SQL server whether local or elsewhere on the LAN; a WAN connection between the two is not advised unless on a very fast private connection.
5. The Java-based Database Admin Tool described in the manual is only installed by the Window Portfolio Server. For catalogue updating, Mac users should use the "Portfolio SQL Upgrade Tool.app" in the Portfolio server folder.

2. NP v8.5 can publish sites from v7.04/7.06, and v8.0/8.1.1 clients. Ideally, on upgrading to v8.5, sites should be republished from v8.5 clients. There should be no problems with vendor supplied templates requiring v7.x -> v8.x adjustments.
3. For production work, ideally Server OSs should be used. However, for demo/light proof of concept work the app will run on desktop OSs: OS 10.4.4+, Windows 2000(SP4), Windows XP(SP2).

You should regard QuickTime (you only need the free version) as part of the basic requirement as Portfolio uses a number of its filters. Mac users should have QT installed by default, Windows users will need to download and install it. Do a full or custom install and not the basic install to ensure that modules like the 'still imaging' are available to Portfolio. Ideally, on a new PC install QT before Portfolio; otherwise, at minimum, close and re-open the Portfolio client for QT's filters to be available.
