Is it necessary to have both Portfolio client and PortWeb on the server?

No. PortWeb alone is sufficient to serve your catalogue to web users. Note the Catalogue must be on the server or on the LAN at that locale (the former is best).

If you maintain a Catalogue at a remote site, use of Portfolio and the client on that server can be a productivity gain though probably a costly option for smaller scale users. Better is to use Portfolio Server on the web server and then access the Catalogue from a client via TCP/IP.
