Yes, though this will only work if your browser is correctly set up so as to know what/where your email application is.

Create your URL field as required. If you want the 'mailto' as a default entry, go to Catalog -> Catalog Administration, Custom Fields tab. Select your URL field and click 'Edit...'.

To cause an email window to appear with the addressee foo@bar.com you enter...

mailto:foo@bar.com

...or for several people add more email addresses, each separated by a comma...

mailto:foo@bar.com,bar@foo.com

OK, let's send mail to several people, with a CC, a blind copy (BCC) and a subject line already filled in...

mailto:foo@bar.com,bar@foo.com,fubar@barfu.com?subject=Suspicion%20Breeds%20Confidence&cc=barfoo@foobar.com&bcc=secretfoo@bar.com

In my last example, see how you can even put in some text into the body of the message...

mailto:foo@bar.com?Subject=Please%20send%20hi-res%20%28Portfolio%20Request%29&Body=Here%20is%20some%20sample%20text

Try using the last example above in a Custom URL Field. In the Thumbnail view, if you enable your URL field you'll now see this...

Click the link and an email window should pop open with your information...

Notes:

Here's a list of ASCII escaped character codes you may find useful: %08 = Backspace %12 = Form Feed %0A = Line Feed %0D = Carriage Return %1B = Escape %20 = Space %21 = ! %22 = " %23 = # %24 = $ %25 = % %26 = & %27 = ' %28 = ( %29 = ) %2A = * %2B = + %2C = , %2D = - %2E = . %2F = / %30-39 = 0-9 %3A = : %3B = ; %3C = < %3D = = %3E = > %3F = ? %40 = @ %41-5A = A-Z %5B = [ %5C = \ %5D = ] %5E = ^ %5F = _ %60 = ` (grave accent) %61-7A = a-z %7B = { %7C = | %7D = } %7E = ~ %7F = DEL (Delete)
